Whoopty doo, it's about time right? Although I never spend much time in front of a TV, I finally realized that I had a great excuse to build a powerful media center PC that can access anything and everything on my network and bring it to the "big screen" in HD.

So without any hesitation I went ahead and ordered what I needed from Newegg, here's what I got:

The rest of the parts I already had which were:
  • 4x1GB DDR2 Ram
  • Dlink USB Wireless Network Adaptor
  • diNovo Edge™ Wireless Keyboard (built in trackpad)

The parts from newegg arrived just 2 days later and I was ready to go, I can now virtually access anything and everything on my home network including movies, music, pictures. Not to mentioned have a full computer and internet capability at my finger tips. I installed boxee, which is an awesome platform/interface to browse through local, network, and online media. It does useful things like organize, and download covers, descriptions, ratings, and trailers for all your media on the fly. The pictures below show the process from beginning to end. Installing the components into the shuttle PC, then formatting it, and finally using it live with HDMI video and sound and having fun with boxee and google earth. I'll let the pictures explain the rest...

I cleaned the machine's inside and out, until there was not a spec of dust. I ensured that all fans worked and airflow was moving properly. After doing some research and reading all kinds of similar reported problems, I came upon a few rare cases that had been caused by bad capacitors.

I went ahead and took off the heatsink so I could see the capacitors near the CPU, and sure enough, they were popped, and leaking. Soon after I decided to see if I could order the caps online, and not let the machines go to waste. I looked around, and found a perfect premium grade capacitor set for Dell Optiplex GX270's, that I ordered from badcaps.net, the order was smooth, the service was great, and I had the 19 capacitors that I needed in no time.

I went ahead and got to work.... I'll let the pictures do the rest of the explaining, enjoy!.

    Why did I do it? Some people go to the store and buy those petty little laptop pads with 2 lame fans running at 5v with a USB - they don't do much. I've tried em, and they all just don't keep my laptop cool. I decided to build something that really works. Something that would take advantage of high powered fans, heatsinks / thermal conductors, and liquid cooling. Most people see things like this running inside Desktop PC's, but it seems to work very well on the outside of a laptop if done properly. I have not yet gotten to the liquid cooling part of the project, just waiting on a water pump, and some good thermal liquid coolant (decided not to use plain water). But even without it, my laptop is not only cool, I can honestly say it's cold. What was the hardest part in the making? By far the most annoying issue I experienced was kinking in the vinyl tubing. A sharp bend on the right side would occur and result in poor water-flow. As a solution I used several cable ties to hold the shape of the tube. There was no other way around this, and it seemed to work out well. The kink was pretty persistent until I had enough cable ties to work all the way around the bend Cons: The only cons of this project are: 1. I cannot turn of the high powered LED lights. They shine very bright at night, and I prefer to leave my fans on, as I ususally don't shut down my lappy. 2. 6 fans running at 18v is not quiet, so it's a little noisy. Average noise decibel per fan running at 10v would be around 20db, running it at 18v would cause the noise decibel to be 36 db, now multiply that by 6 for each fan and we got a noise decibel of 216db.     For the last 5-6 days or so, every time I visit alexa it's showing me the status are not available (N/A), and it really started to piss me off because of the fact that there are not stats our rank then drops, not that it matters but I still like to strive towards a better rank.     This could be powered by battery, USB, or re-wired DC adapter. In this example I used a 9v battery, but will end up using a DC adapter to avoid wasting batteries.

    What I used:

    1. Small motor from an old CD player
    2. One DVD
    3. One 9v battery (and wire connectors)
    4. Some stripped wires
    5. Velcro Tape
    6. Small lightbulb. (Can be found on those strips of holiday lights)
    7. Cap from a interestingly shaped water bottle
    8. Three screws.
    9. Strip of Metal

    How I made it (brief):
    It was all simple really. First taking the DVD you will notice it has 2 layers. I took a small and thin flat head screwdriver to pry the layers apart. Then I took scissors and cut even slits in the DVD. Then, holding it over a burning candle I bent each fin on the DVD to an angle. Next, I had a motor (several) from old CD players. This was perfect 'cause the DVD fan blade clips right onto the motor, also making it easy to replace if it breaks. Then I wrapped the back of the motor with the velcro tape and stuck it to the receiving end on the top of the strip of metal. After that, I mounted the metal strip onto the bottle cap, and put a screw in it to hold it down. I also place 2 little screws on the side for later use when wiring. I then took the small light bulb and wedged it in between the motor and the metal strip. Then I put a piece of velcro on battery and stuck it to the metal strip as well. I took the wires from the battery connector and connected them to the small side screws. I linked up the wires from the motor and from the light, and connected them to the side screws as well to complete the circuit.

    Here is the final product. (It's hard to tell when it's spinning, but when the light is on, it's working)

    ]]>     2008-01-04T01:47:13-05:00     Netscape Navigator not so bad? urn:uuid:797daa45-40c7-9201-36dd-8db05a27de6e Today, I downloaded the latest version of Netscape Navigator, after a talk with Tom Scott in an attempt to check out the site and make sure everything looked smooth in the browser. To my surprise it looked and felt exactly like firefox. I kept an eye on the memory stamp as I used it and even more to my surprise it stayed under 60,000 kb as I used it. Everything else about it seemed to feel exactly like Firefox, including their render engine which worked nicely and smooth since it was balancing memory well...

    This kinda makes me wonder when Mozilla will get around to fixing their memory issues. I know they are not considered \"leaks\" but there is definitely something going on. My FF memory stamp gets up to around 450,000kb on a normal browsing session.

    I guess I also have to keep in mind that there are no plugins within Netscape Navigator, which is probably why it feels so light. Either way they certainly improved the browser incredibly, and they totally ripped Firefoxs interface.

    CE 6, Web Advisor, and Web CT- what are all these things, and why are there so many different ones when they all potentially do the same thing? If you don’t already grasp the concept of what they are, and why so many colleges and universities across America use them I’ll explain.

    These are all web based content management systems. They allow quick and easy communication back and forth from student to teacher, teacher to student, and student to student. They also provide the management of projects, assignments, and discussions, while storing other types of data. They provide email, complete account & billing management, as well as complex scheduling solutions. The only problem is that they are using individual web based technologies. Not to mention they are extremely bulky and inconsistent Their infrastructure of databases, content, and information’s are developed in their particular environments and have no association with each other whatsoever. So why do these schools have these hacked-together solutions, and pay hundreds of thousands of dollar for them? Don't look at me.

    While trying to obtain features that one solution may have and the other may not, colleges and universities force students and teachers to use several content management systems but for an overall similar purpose. Then the user must setup and manage multiple accounts on separate platforms, which just causes extra hassle. Remembering what information can be found where now becomes a task, and your left tangled up in one big mess.

    What I would like to see created is ONE efficient management system that maintains all features necessary in order to create a successful web-based project management system for both students and teachers alike, with a light weight, user-friendly interface. Emotion: happy.gif

    I believe he wrote this book because it was his life; he too grew up wanting to be a leader. Maxwell looked on to take many examples from others, and even paid sums of cash just for inspiration. Simply, he wants to share these golden details of truth, and leadership with the world as others have shared with him. All of Maxwell’s outlooks, and perspectives are completely oriented with how to really influence others, and that is precisely why he wrote this book.

    He goes on to explain that the process of becoming a leader is not an easy task. Surely one cannot become a leader in the span of a single 24 hour day as he mentioned, a true leader can only achieve his status through daily exercises and techniques that must be practiced perpetually. It takes a lifetime to achieve this, and can only be done through the hardest work of empowering and influencing others.

    Throughout the course of the book, Maxwell uses many words to describe the traits of a leader. Competence, connection, character, trust, loyalty, empowerment, influential, dedicated, disciplined, goal-oriented, vision-oriented, and love are just some of the many descriptions the author uses to describe an accurate leader. The excellent part is that everything he describes and explains is used so positively that it would almost be hard for this book not to motivate to others.

    The Management Myth – This is completely true, if it weren’t, companies wouldn’t have an owner position, and a manager position. There is a clear need for both of these positions, and they play distinct roles in each and every business. There must be a leader (owner) setting goals pushing the business perspective and goals farther, and the manager is there to ensure that the employees are doing their jobs, as well as maintaining the general aspects of the business.

    The Entrepreneur Myth – An agreed with, and valid example of how every successful businessman is not a leader. However, many will be there to follow him JUST because he is successful.

    The knowledge Myth – Another correct point made by Maxwell. I had a brilliant science teacher in middle school. He seemed like the smartest man in the world, knowing answers to every question we asked him. However, he didn’t know the first thing about being a leader to the requirements met in the book, nor did he know anything about business.

    The Pioneer Myth – This is an example I have experienced in my life. I remember within my first years of school, several kids would push their way up to the front of the line, almost like it was out of habit. I always stood and watched with the thought in my head, “why are they doing that?”. Does it really make a difference whether one is first, or last in line? Did they think the teacher would think differently of them if they were first? Or maybe they were just being kids. But, I can clearly envision how I never understood what the big deal was. Leadership is proven by action, not by how far ahead you may think you are.

    The Position Myth – This point was not as clear as the previous four, although did give some interesting points, and quotes. And yes, while I do agree with Maxwell’s opinion, it is not always the case. Take a look at the recent article about Viacom’s booting Tom Freston.
